I wanted to share some tips on what I do to winterize my home, hair and my skin. While we all are in our cozy and warm little homes enjoying the heat from furnaces, fireplaces, electric heaters etc. I don't know what you use to heat your home with, but I use a furnace and a furnace has dry air. By using it, it can leave our skin, hair and homes very dry!. due to this our hair skin suffers from being dry to. It also can dehydrate you too. make sure to drink plenty of water.
I'm going to share a few tips that I have used, and I know they work.
House:
I get a big pot, the bigger the better. Fill it with water. Put on stove, bring to a boil. After reaching a fast boil, turn stove down to medium or low heat. That way the water can continue to boil, but not real fast. As the water boils, (side picture) it will release the steam into the house all over. As long as you have the water on stove boiling releasing steam, your furnace don't come on as much, that is also saving you money on your heating bills too!
To tell you a story: I got this idea from my mother, back in the day she would use her coffee pot. When she got done making and drinking coffee, she'd take out the coffee strainer, fill pot up with water sit it on the stove and let it boil all day long until she went to bed. It was a great idea it saved on her heating bills, she never complained about them either.
These are the pots my mom had. I bought her the one on the right for Christmas one year. Do you remember these kind of coffee pots? Now it's Kerig! LOL times has changed.
Caution: Make sure to check pot every so often to see if it needs to be refilled with water. As water boils, it do evaporates into the air. Pot will need to be checked often to make sure it don't boil dry.
WARNING: If you going to leave your house, turn the stove off. Don't leave the stove on.
Hair:
What I do to keep my hair moisturized/winterized, I did a video showing the steps I did for a contest, so please ignore the parts about contest. I kept the video, because it is what I do to my hair to keep it moisturized in the winter. I will do another one one day, if I change what I do or video become just no good anymore, I don't need to do another one, because I'm still doing this same method. I'm not in a rush. :)
Also, wearing protective style in your hair is the way to go for the wintertime too. It keeps your hair out of harm's way. while ends are being protected, hair is staying healthy that is what produce healthy hair growth. I'm able to keep my hair on my head.
Here's some pics of my "favorite to do" protective style: without using weave, wigs, extension braids, etc.
WARNING: make sure the hats or scarves that you're wearing has a protective barrier, which is a satin or nylon lining in it. If not, use your bonnet or wave cap to cover your hair before putting on the hat or scarf that don't have that kind of lining. This also will help keep moisture in your hair.
Skin:
Lastly, what I do to protect my skin from the harsh winter elements. What I do is take less showers in the wintertime. I read somewhere that taking a lot of showers/baths can dry out your skin. I'm not saying don't clean yourself, but to lessen the shower or baths you take. In the wintertime you don't sweat a lot to be doing a lot of showering or bathing as if you would do in the Summertime. If you need to shower or bathe, you need to protect or keep skin moisturized in the winter.
I have a slight case of eczema, my skin can be very dry, itchy sometimes it cracks and it peels. Wintertime don't give it any justice.
What I do to keep it moisturized is:
Clean skin, apply oil or Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline) to my skin afterwards, I still love my Vaseline for moisturizing it works good for me I've had no problems with using it. I also uses Shea Butter and Lotion on my face. I don't like to put Vaseline on my face. Most of the time, I uses my Shea Butter Mix or my favorite lotion,( picture on the left) St Ives Oatmeal and Shea Butter Lotion. It has 100% natural Moisturizers in it. I also washes my hands through out the day for cleanliness, I uses the lotion to put on my hands after washing them.
Using a lotion that has moisturizers in it, is a great protection also. No matter what the name is. I hope these are some helpful tips. Thanks for reading.
If you tried any of the suggestions mentioned in this blog, please leave a comment letting me know what your results were. Thank you for reading, Have a Blessed and wonderful day!
