Fairy Knots: How I Keep Them Away

What is a fairy knot? 

A fairy not is a single strand knot meaning the knot is on 1 strand of your hair, why it's on one strand is because the hair is curly and it curled around on the strand. . Strands of hair curls upon itself or another strand of hair at the end. ex: 1 strand turned to the right another is turned to the left, and it's curly the strands has away of wrapping around itself I have curly hair, this was happening to me a lot. My hair will curl around another strand of hair.  that's just part of having curly hair.

I did a video 2 years ago after transitioning for 11 months, I did the Big Chop on Jan, 2010. When this video was made it was in March, 2010. At the time I was clueless to what causes the Fairy Knots, knots on the end of my hair. I was ready to cut my hair, thinking that was going to end it all. To my surprise, and learning about my hair and what it do, it would not have stopped the knots from forming, but only for awhile, then without proper care,the knot would have reappeared . That's what curly hair does.

 I can say  watching other natural hair ladies videos while doing my research on this situation,  has educated me to know what causes these knots. I also learned how to take care of my hair to prevent them from returning as much as I can.   Take a look at the video:




You'll see what I mean?. I can say now that I know what causes the knots. If you don't keep your hair moisturized that causes it. Using products that are drying to the hair can causes them and rough handling of the hair. I think that your hair has to be trained to what you do to it. When I started out you can look at my hair and tell it wasn't trained to nothing. So with that being said, my hair was going to be unruly to anything that's new. It's like a foreign object to it. As I continued on with the moisturizing wetting and sealing in water, it got better.

Q: What Causes Fairy Knots?
A: Dry Hair. 

                                  B: Rough Combing and Brushing
                                          C: Products that are drying to the hair

This is my method of keeping the fairy and her knots away, I hope it works for you. 

To keep from getting fairy knots are:  

   1. be  gentle with my hair.

   2. finger comb hair instead of using combs or brushes. 

   3. Keep hair moisturized. 

   4. Use less drying products on hair.
